About this event

  • 13 days 16 hours

Training sessions dates for 2024 will take place between 10am to 2pm on Saturday, May 18, 2024; and, 9am to 2pm on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

The Workshops are held at the Ag Pavilion at Boise's Julia Davis Park. Experienced dog handlers (eTrainers) will work with your dog one-on-one and focus on your dog's reaction and body language to a snake, porcupine or skunk. The avoidance behavior is taught by putting a remote-controlled electronic collar on the dog. When the dog's attention is on the snake, porcupine or skunk, an unpleasant low stimulation is applied to the dog. The stimulation is similar to static electricity. The session takes about 30 minutes depending on the dog, though most dogs learn the avoidance behavior quickly. Each training session has a seperate per training Fee.

There is a Fee for the avoidance training. Please note that NO refunds are available.

You will be "emailed" an Appointment Confirmation (and Time) with additional Event information within 24 hours. A digital map of the Workshop's location in Boise's Julia Davis Park will also be provided.

NOTE: A dog can be registered for ONLY TWO training session rattlesnake, porcupine or skunk per workshop date.We strongly suggest, "if possible", to seperate different training sessions between the two Workshop Dates. Veterinarian behavioral canine science has indicated that more than two training session within the same day or week is too much stimulation for one dog.

FREE Trap Removal Clinic

The Idaho Trappers Association will be hosting a FREE clinic at the Workshops on how to remove a dog from various traps. The only way to learn these methods is by a "hands-on demonstration" while being instructed by professional trappers.

Frequently asked questions

What does the training accomplish?

Each individual training session is directed towards having your dog(s) avoid "all" snakes, porcupines or skunks.

What is the reputable science that supports the training?

Operant conditioning. You may want to Goggle/Siri or Alexa it to get a great deal of additional information on the reputable behavioral science. Also "your positive reinforcement" of your dog's avoidance towards a snake, porcupine or skunk" is instrumental in the training.

What is my role in the training.

Your role is "significant." Dogs are able to pick up our fears too, so we have you also show, during each individual training, your own avoidance behavior towards the snakes, porcupines or skunks.

What stimulation level is given to the dog?

We use the lowest setting possible that shows the dog acknowledges the stimulation. It's similar to your getting a static electricity shock going across your carpet.

How long does the training last on the dog?

Generally, most dogs maintain the avoidance behavior long-term. However, many dog owners may want the peace of mind and 'may consider' a refresher after 5 years which is what we recommend. Some dogs may require a Refresher at a shorter interval.

What type of snakes are used in the training?

We use "live" very wild gopher snakes (that are non-venomous) which look and behave like rattlesnakes. We capture the snakes only a few weeks prior to the workshops to maintain their rattler like behaviors (i.e., coiling, striking, hissing and shaking their tails).

What type of porcupines and skunks are used in their avoidance training?

We have used taxidermy mounts (with fresh scent) for the past 5 years which "have been very effective." We started out with live porkies, but they have a mite that is extremely detrimental to dog's noses and the quills are a problem. Pet skunk owners don't want dogs going at their pets.

What follows the avoidance training workshops?

Within 2 weeks you will receive by email a digital copy of the "2024 Dog Owner's Reference Guide Manual: Post Avoidance Training" for each training session(s) (rattlesnake, porcupine or skunk) your dog has gone through. Theses Manuals cover all the information you were provided at the Workshop.

What is my responsibility in avoiding my dog getting bitten by a rattlesnake.

The key is to understand rattlesnake ecology so that you're knowledgeable when rattlesnakes are most active. The information is included at the Workshop and in your digital 2024 Dog Owner's Reference Guide Manual that will be emailed to you after the Workshop.

What confidence should I understand about the avoidance training?

The training is "NOT" foolproof; there are situations that just being in nature that happen. However, the avoidance training and "your knowledge" about the ecology of rattlesnakes, porcupines and skunks reduces significantly the risk of an event occurring.

How long does the training session last?

Our experience shows that most dogs take less than 30 minutes to acquire the live snake avoidance behavior. However, some dogs pick up the avoidance behavior very quickly and many take less time; or a few dogs may require more time.
